In Houston's 1970s and 1980s ranch houses, the cabinet boxes have often outlasted two or three countertops already. Sound boxes, refinished or freshly painted, can carry a new stone top without being replaced, and worrying that new counters will force new cabinets is usually a worry about nothing.

Swapping the counter without touching the cabinets is one of the most common projects we do, but it does put a few things on the checklist that a full remodel would otherwise handle for us.

If you are keeping your existing sink and faucet, we confirm the exact cutout size and faucet hole spacing at template so the new top is cut to match rather than forcing a plumbing change. Reusing a sink you already like is common on this kind of project, and we set it into the new stone the same way we would on a full remodel.

What can go wrong with older cabinets

The main risk on an older kitchen is a cabinet box that has shifted or settled unevenly over the years, which we catch at template rather than at install, since that is the point where we can still plan around it. A box that is too far out of level for a direct set sometimes needs shimming or a small structural fix before the stone goes on, and we flag that during the estimate rather than as a surprise on install day.

Appliances and fixtures that stay in place

A cooktop, a range hood or a built-in dishwasher usually stays exactly where it is on this kind of project, so we confirm the cutout size and clearance for each at template so the new stone lands correctly around them without a gap or an overhang that interferes with an appliance door.
